The University of Virginia has a reputation of having one of the best looking campuses in the nation and in person, it doesn’t disappoint. Perhaps the first thing you will notice about the University is its very traditional look. Almost all of the buildings (including the sports complexes) are built with red brick and incorporate white columns and trim.

UVA’s most well known area is probably the Lawn and Rotunda, around which the University is centered. The Lawn is a large grass strip lined with academic buildings and Lawn Dorms (a prestiges living option only open to 4th year students after a competitive application process). During the spring, the Lawn truly is the place to be on Grounds, whether you are tossing a football around, hanging out with friends in between classes, or even having a class outside (if you you’re your professor is so inclined).

While UVA has a fairly large campus, don’t worry too much. The University does a great job of grouping similar academic departments into the same area. For example, if you’re an engineering major, most of your classes will be located in only a handful of buildings that are located close to each other. You will definitely appreciate this when you only have 10 minutes between classes. If however, you have that one elective that is located on the opposite side of campus, don’t worry- the University has an excellent bus service that can get you to anywhere you need to be on Grounds. And in truth, there really isn’t anywhere on Grounds that can be considered outside of walking distance.

There are few college campuses in the nation that are as beautiful as the University of Virginia. Throughout the UVA Grounds (which is how students refer to the campus) southern architecture complete with red brick and white columns dominate the landscape.

All of the buildings on grounds are designed with the architectural legacy of Thomas Jefferson in mind. The University of Virginia has a full-time architect who

must approve the design of any potential building to ensure they fit into the architectural image of Jefferson. Even the sporting facilities (football stadium, basketball stadium) have columns to blend in with the architectural theme.

The most beautiful and recognizable location is The UVA Lawn which encompasses Thomas Jefferson’s Academic Village. Jefferson believed that the best way to foster learning was to have the professors and students living in close proximity. In his original design for the University, the professors lived in 10 buildings referred to as Pavilions while the students lived in rooms located between the Pavilions referred to a lawn rooms. The Pavilions and lawn rooms are arranged in a rectangle with the Rotunda at one end.

The UVA Rotunda is one of the most recognizable buildings in the history of American architecture and was designed after the Pantheon in Rome. The Academic Village is currently part of the national historic preservation list. In between the pavilions and lawn rooms resides a large grass area known as the The Lawn. During the spring and fall, students gather on the lawn to play soccer, throw a football, or have a cookout. During football weekends, the lawn serves as the meeting grounds for UVA alumni.

Campus

Despite the fact the University of Virginia is a public state institution with a total enrollment of just under 20,000 students, the University of Virginia campus (Grounds) is not overwhelming. You can walk from one end to the other in less than 30 minutes because the University was designed to be walkable.

Parking is a serious issue in Charlottesville, VA around the University because there are very few parking garages and parking lots. It is very difficult for someone to commute to school using their car. Therefore, the vast majority of students live within easy walking distance to class. There is a bus service that runs throughout the day if you do not have to walk, it is raining, or you are in a hurry.

The majority of the graduate programs are located within the undergraduate community, which contributes to the overall cohesiveness of the student population. The only schools that are not within walking distance are the Law School and Business School, which are on the University Bus lines. There are also plenty of parking spots at both schools to accommodate the commuting students.
