This cafe/restaurant/bookstore is reminiscent of the kinds of cafes that you would imagine exist in the best cafe cities. It's located on 1700 E. Main Street in downtown, so its a good twenty minutes from the campus. It's the perfect place to meet a friend, or spent some time reading with a cup of coffee, tea or pastry. The tea selection is nice and they also have a giant cup of hot chocolate called, Mirabelle, which will be worth your time and money.
Don't be fooled by the name, it's not a German restaurant, but they do have a selection of European newspapers for your reading pleasure. Further pleasure in reading can be found with the great selection of books they have available, and if you buy dinner, all books are 25% off. They also have local art on display that you could purchase.
One of the neatest thing about frequenting this place on a Tuesday or Wednesday night is that they have beers (on Tuesday) and wine (Wednesday) for half price, and their wine selection is very tasty so its worth a gander!
The food is surprisingly good for a cafe, I recommend the hummus plate as an appetizer because the hummus is the best I've had in this town, and then anything on the dinner menu (while a little pricey) is flavorful and very satisfying. They also have a decent selection for brunch and the sandwiches are only available for lunch so make sure to take the time to check that out. Leave room for dessert because their tiramisu or banofetti is tremendous.
On top of everything, this place has free wireless, so its a nice place to study, not to mention that the refills are plentiful. It closes at 11pm, so that gives you plentiful of time to enjoy the cafe and all its tasty treats.

Blackfinn

What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon during football season then at Richmond's coolest sports bar? Located downtown on 10th street, Blackfinn is an upscale sports-oriented retaurant that is well worth the price.
Sundays are hardly ever crowded. When you go in, you are immediately seated at a booth or table with your own private television screen, which can be tuned to any game playing in the country. This is a great way for displaced fans to see their team's home games no matter where they're being broadcast.
If that wasn't enough incentive, the food is delicious. My friends and I usually start off with the spinach and artichoke dip appetizer, move on to one of Blackfinn's delicious burgers, and finish it off with an apple pie. We usually have to spread it out over a long period of time because of the game, but the waitresses don't seem to mind.
Also, if your party is over 21 and you like beer, they have these cool personal beer taps that they can bring to your table. I've never tried one, but they look they they hold about 10 beers each.
As for the service, I am continually impressed. The last time my girlfriend and I went, the waitress brought out our appetizer after our food by accident. So, in order to make up for it, the manager personally visited our table to apologize, comped our appetizer, and gave us free dessert! This, mind you, while the restaurant was packed full (we went on college football night).
So, all in all, I would definitely recommend Blackfinn, whether you're a sports fan searching for a place to watch your favorite team or simply a college student looking for a nice dinner. It's definitely worth the price.

The Tobacco Company offers one of the most memorable fine dining experiences in Richmond. It's the type of restaurant where you're certain the atmosphere, food, and service will impress just about anyone you take. The menu is on the pricey side, but less expensive than I would expect from such a swanky place.
The first time I ate here was for dinner, but I've also come for lunch. The food was delicious and the service courteous and prompt on both occasions.
The Tobacco Company building was actually used as a tobacco factory before it became a restaurant. This history gives the atmosphere at the Tobacco Company a very unique feel. There are three floors surrounding a central skylit atrium filled with living hanging plants. A wrought iron elevator transports diners to the upper floors of the restaurant. For smokers, the Tobacco Company circulates cigar girls who offer tobacco products to customers in the smoking sections. The lounge and bar are richly furnished and beautifully decorated, but I haven't been here on a busy weekend night so I'm not sure what the bar scene is like.

Richbrau Brewing Company is a good place because it offers a variety of things to satisfy your night out. The bottom portion is a restaurant, with good ambiance, friendly staff, and good food. The style leans toward fine dining as evidenced by the white tablecloths and formal atmosphere. The selection isn't huge and some of the prices for the main course (ie. duck with alligator sausage) are steep, but we had the filet, wrap, and chicken and no one was dissatisfied with their meal. The shining spot is obviously, their beers, and they have specialty beers that they change every so often. My overall experience was excellent, but it was probably mostly due to the brilliant presence of the very generous and witty 'subway guys'.
The second floor of Richbrau is a bar, where they have a pool table, darts and a dance floor - not too impressive, but a dance floor nonetheless, and it gets busy on a weekend night. It's a relaxed place to hang out with friends and if you are lucky with the music selection, you should do a round on the dance floor. In addition, this is one of the many spots in Richmond that occasionally has live music and they have specials, like $1 Pint on Mondays during the game. Check them out on their website.
Located in the heart of downtown on 1214 East Cary Street with the restaurant and pub menu available until 11pm.

Located on the corner of Laurel and Broad Street in downtown Richmond, Aladdin's Express Restaurant has become very popular among University of Richmond students. The establishment offers a wide selection of Mediterranean and American cuisines as well as a variety of hookah flavors.
The atmosphere of the place is great, making the interior like an authentic Turkish hookah bar. A big screen television playing Arabic music videos and a decorative fountain provide pleasing background noise while you eat. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable and occasionally give out free desserts to frequent customers.
Since Aladdin's is located across the street from Virginia Commonwealth University, its clientele is almost exclusively college students, which means that the prices are catered to fit the modest student budget. A single hookah, which normally satisfies around 4-6 people, is only $9.99. Charcoal refills are free.
Hookah is not the only thing Aladdin's is good for, though. The food is excellent and their Philly cheesesteak is the best found outside of Philly itself. This, coupled with the fact that the restaurant is often open until 2am or later, makes Aladdin's the perfect spot for midnight munchies.
Aladdin's restaurant is about a 15-20 minute drive from the University of Richmond campus.

- For the Love of a Cafe
- If you haven't already heard the tragic news about Cafe Gutenburg, this article is here to bring you the sad news that it has officially closed as of Sunday, February 24. Apparently, one of its partners decided to end the partnership and the other two had to come up with $300,000 or find another investor. Neither happened in time, and Richmond is now bereft of one of its finest establishments. I'm not exaggerating. If you perhaps have lots of money squirreled away somewhere, and you want to i...

- Located about 5 minutes from campus, Sheetz is the perfect place to get some made-to-order sandwiches after you've spent your day studying until 3am. Sheetz is open 24/7 and is sort of a combination gas station/convenience store (with alcohol)/awesome late-night snacking spot. I can't tell you how many times my friends and I have had a sudden craving for a cheeseburger or soft pretzel at an ungodly hour in the morning and gone to Sheetz. Granted, during some of the insanely late hours of the ni...

- For Comfort
- This southern cuisine on Broad Street is a favorite among those who know it for a number of reasons. The atmosphere is appealing, with big windows, paintings and water served in clear jam jars. The restaurant itself is in the shape of a long hall, with full bar and dim lighting. Best of all, of course, is the food! After a meal there, you'll know why it's called "comfort"-it's the ultimate comfort food and your belly will be very happy. I usually start with the baby spinach salad, which is surp...
