If you didn't already know, here's a heads up about Richmond's art scene. Richmond has its share of great artists and musicians and they are easily found if you are looking. One of these events is a First Fridays Artwalk, which happens on the first Friday of every month, rain or shine, from 6 to 10 pm. You can walk around and check out all the art galleries and cultural venues on Broad Street. There are usually about 30 different venues participating and there are also a number of restaurants located in that area for good eats. It's the section of Broad street that is located near VCU in between Belvidere and 2nd Street, but parking isn't that much of a problem if its after 6pm. My favorite is "Quirk" gallery because it has a lot of creative pieces by local pieces and you can purchase any of them to support the artists if you'd like. The crowd is good, and this is one of the best ways to experience the unique vibe of Richmond, check it out!

Whether you're an undergrad or a stressed graduate student, it's always important to head outside to gain a little perspective (and to get some exercise as well).
Downtown Richmond, less than 20 minutes from the UR campus, offers a plethora of outdoor opportunities. The James River park system provides easy access to hiking/running/mountain biking trails. Buttermilk trail, combined with the North Bank trail and Forest Hill park, makes for a moderately challenging mountain bike loop.
Belle Isle is the perfect place to spend a Saturday- you can head out for a run, cool off in the James River rapids, and bask in the sun all afternoon long.
If you like to rock climb, the quarry and the rock face at Belle Isle are great.
The James River offers Class I-IV rapids, right in the downtown area, if you're into whitewater rafting or kayaking. There are multiple launch points throughout the park system.
The James is noted for its tremendous fishing as well- bass, sunfish, carp, catfish, and other species are all caught downtown.
Whether you like to run, hike, bike, fish, whitewater, or relax, the James River park system is the place to be near UR.

The largest and most unique park in Richmond is the James River Park System. It includes over 550 acres of shoreline and islands in the heart of the city, extending from Huguenot Bridge in the West to a half mile beyond the I-95 Bridge in the East. It includes most of the fall line of the James. Rocks, rapids, meadows and forests make for an area of unspoiled natural beauty - a little bit of wilderness in the heart of the city.
