Spider Swimming

The University of Richmond co-ed club swim team was founded this year by a group of upperclassman. It currently includes a wide variety of swimmers ranging from former womens varsity division 1 athletes to previous club swimmers. The team usually practices (four times a week) in the evening for roughly one hour, swimming from anywhere between 1500 to 3000 yards in each practice. Overall, the practices are structured in a way that caters to each persons ability and desired work ethic. If a group wants to focus on distance versus sprinting etc, we often split up in order to get the most out of each practice. Moreover, the experienced competitors are extremely beneficial to the overall team as they guide the less experienced athletes. Despite the club swim team being founded only this year there is a strong contingent of swimmers who want to swim. I can see that the club has the potential to improve and become a strong team in the near future.

UR Women's Rugby

As a freshman, when other girls were joining sororities, I took up rugby. I missed team sports, since I had played soccer and softball my entire life until I came to college. The women who play rugby at the University of Richmond are fun, welcoming people who love the opportunity to teach others about rugby.

One of the main benefits of playing club rugby in my mind was the flexibility. Since rugby is not a varsity sport, practices are not held every single day, and members need not dedicate their entire extracurricular lives to just rugby.

Pictured is the women's rugby team in the fall of 2006, just after playing William and Mary at the Ed and Sandy Lee Rugby Tournament at Pole Green Park in Richmond, VA.

Archery Club0.06134033203125

The University of Richmond Archery Club is an organization created for the purpose of rekindling an interest in archery and other less mechanized forms of target shooting. Also, to ensure that the modern man has a secondary method of defense in the event of an apocalyptic occurrence that terminates all forms of technology and similar progressive advancements, the club focuses on building a character independent from both the mental and physical constraints of modern society.

Just kidding. ;) The UR Archery Club is a newly re-created club for mainly recreational archery, although if members would like to participate in competitive shooting it's possible. Everyone is welcome, from beginners who have never held nor seen a bow, to the more advanced archers with shooting experience.

The club's current goal is to get funding from the university, so we can purchase enough equipment for a basic shoot (location to be determined.) Once that's done, our hope is that we will be able to meet once every week or so, journey to open field, and let loose some arrows for a couple of hours. Instruction is provided for those with no personal experience or for anyone interested.

We do have reasonably strict safety guidelines that will be provided and reviewed before we commence shooting that follow the international competition regulations.

UR Polo

UR Polo has a tradition as a fun, competitive club team. We strive to provide the opportunity for all members, new and experienced, to contribute to our organization socially and in the pool.

University of Richmond Club Water Polo is a great group of guys. Coming to a new school hours away from home to a bunch of people you don't know is pretty scarey, and acceptance is the first thing anyone wants. The Water Polo guys made the transition into college a lot easier, and I made a few friends in doing it.

On top of making friends, water polo keeps me in shape and feeds my competitive nature. I had never played water polo and I am still awful at it but I enjoy the competition and the fun I have in the water. I've also gotten to travel to other schools to play water polo, and it was neat to go to other campuses and experience new things. I'm not saying water polo is the best thing ever, but it definitely helped me out. Joining any sport team or club is a great thing to do when your a freshman in college.
