The Lake Effect

The Westhampton Lakes serves a variety of activities. For me, it acts as a place of solitude and restoration. Three laps around the around the lake equals one mile, and I often find myself running the path and sometimes expanding my run into the surrounding forest. The path takes me past the Commons, the library, two bridges, endless benches, and the lower forum. An unspoken but highly liked rule dictates that I say “hi” to other students I see on the path, and thus I seem to make new friends four days a week. Also, one favorite line I always seem to get at parties is, “hey, I see you running around the lake all the time.” One lap around the Westhampton Lake is never enough, and the scenery and lake creatures demand at least six laps worth of attention.

The lake also provides a scenic place for studying and reading. One particular bench, right before the dirt staircase leading into the forest, I like to use for recreational reading or when I want to be alone or pray. I can see the beavers from there (we have two), whom my friends and I fondly refer to Ollie(s). I love talking on my phone and sitting on that bench, or else slowly walking across the bridge while chatting. I also like to use the lake path when I’m avoiding someone and don’t want to take to normal route to class.

Every year during Lent, the Catholic Campus Ministry plants stakes around the lake and in the forest and the Catholic students walk the Stations of the Cross, silently holding candles. Even this year, in the fog and scattered rain, we still walked around the lake and continued the tradition. The Westhampton Lake manages to bring students together and gives the campus a distinct center.

Greek Theatre

The Jenkins Greek Theatre sits on a wooded hillside behind the Gray and North Court dorms and across from the tennis courts. It was built in 1929 by UR board of trustees member Luther H. Jenkins and has been used ever since for parties, events, concerts, weddings, and performances. It is also a great place to hang out and do homework, or to just enjoy the nice weather.

It is especially easy to walk to from Gray Court. When I lived on the first floor during my freshman year, I could literally roll out of bed and be on the grassy steps in two minutes. This was especially useful when there were concerts going on in the theatre.

The theatre itself seats 2,000-2,500 people, although it is rarely that full. Though it is empty more often than not, it is still one of the most beautiful places on campus, and at the University of Richmond, that's saying something.
