Waterfront Dining

Tyler’s Grill, more commonly called the Pier, is the place to eat if you’re looking for a meal to take to the library to eat while studying or to your room to eat while watching TV. It provides the same caliber of food as is in the main dining hall but the convenience and portion control of take out.

The Pier sits on the Westhampton Lake on the first floor of the Tyler Haynes Commons. If you choose to sit down and eat your meal, you can sit near a floor-to-ceiling window with a view of the lake or in a booth that has a perfect view of a television, usually playing sports.

There is also a kiosk to get frozen yogurt and smoothies on the same floor, so dinner and dessert can be purchased in the same venue. All meal plans allow you to purchase $7.11 of food in exchange for a meal swipe at the Pier, but only certain meal plans allow students to use meal swipes for fro-yo and smoothies.

Some Pier favorites are the chicken Caesar salad and the spicy curly fries. They also offer various wraps (grilled chicken, southwest turkey) and sandwiches (grilled chicken, pulled pork, turkey & swiss). They also offer a combo of any entrée, a side of fries, chips, or a garden salad, and a medium fountain drink for a meal swipe. Students can also purchase fruit, yogurt, 100 calorie packs, candy, and more to take back to their rooms for future snacks. Richmond is really great at responding to student feedback, so when students asked for an additional make of coffee on campus last year, the Pier added Dunkin Donuts coffee.

It’s nice to have a choice of where to eat on campus, and when students don’ t have time for a long sit-down at D-hall or when they just want to switch it up, the Pier is a great option.

An Overview of the Cellar

Located on the bottom level of the Tyler Haynes Commons, the Cellar is a pub-style restaurant that features the campus' only liquor license. It is open nightly throughout the week, often featuring karaoke and live bands based both in the school and throughout the area.

The restaurant itself is comprised of three areas: the bar, the front room, and the back room. The front room features the stage, a projector screen for when the big game is on, a selection of booths and tables, and even a small foosball table. The back room features a big screen TV and a beautiful view of Westhampton Lake. It is occasionally rented out for private parties (big groups are always seated in the back room when it is available).

Both the wait staff and the cooks are comprised almost entirely of student workers, which means you always see a familiar face. Bar positions are regulated to grad students.

On weeknights, the Cellar is especially crowded as hordes of 21-and-over students flock to UR's only bar. The place often ends up being standing-room only. The bar itself features a variety of beers, as well as a small selection of wines.

Recently, several instances of underage drinking have caused the UR police department to post an officer at the entrance of the restaurant during busy hours to discourage any minors from risking the establishment's ABC license. Now, every person who enters the Cellar must have their Spidercard or ID checked and recieve a special wristband in order to drink.

As far as the food is concerned, the Cellar's menu provides a fair selection, from burgers and pizza to seafood and salad (although you should probably avoid any fish). Weekly specials are also featured, which are usually a step up from the normal menu. Takeout orders are also an option.

Coffee Break

8:15 at Boatwright sits in the foyer of the library. The venue serves Starbucks coffee and drinks and offers an array of baked goods and Einstein Bagels. Students around the library are frequently seen with Starbucks cups, as the location offers extreme convenience to late-night studiers. Because the library is a fairly central location on campus, too, students frequently pick up breakfast or coffee on their way to class.

8:15 also has a few upholstered chairs in which you can relax during a study break. There are also several toasters and a microwave, meant for the bagels but there for anyone’s use at any time. Open Monday through Thursday from 7:30am-1:00am and with shortened hours on weekends, the only complaint from some is that the venue is not open on Saturdays, on which students can get coffee and breakfast only at D-Hall. The baristas are very friendly, and, though the drinks are sold at pricey Starbucks rates, the convenience is unbeatable. If you’re a coffee lover, pick a meal plan with a lot of Dining Dollars because Starbucks is hard to pass up for a stressed caffeine craver mid-week!

D-hall

Some schools have really good food for the students, and other schools not so much. The dining hall here at U of R was pretty good last year and has changed a lot over the summer. I'll leave it up to you but I feel that the changes are for the better. In the pizza section, they have added platters of nachos with all the toppings anyone would want to add. They have also replaced the old taco bar with a more up to date Latin-American food bar with some pretty cool things on the menu (like plantains). The sandwich station is now self-serve so people can get their food much more efficiently and the lines for it have disappeared. Don't worry though, there is someone there watching so no one does anything funny. I have also heard that they are thinking of making the dining hall tray-less, that way people take less food which reduces waste because people always take more than they can eat. If the quality of food is a big decision on where you want to go to school, I suggest University of Richmond.

Trayless Fridays

In its never-ending quest to become the most eco-friendly campus dining hall in the country, D-hall has recently instituted a policy called Trayless Fridays. Every Friday, the cafeteria trays are taken away and are only available by request. The idea is that by not using any trays once a week, we can save water and dish soap and therefore save the environment. The University also claims that it will cut down on overeating by encouraging students not to eat more than they can carry in two hands.

Unfortunately, there have been numerous complaints among the student body about the inconveniences of no-tray days. Not having a tray has caused countless spills while students try to juggle their plates, cups, and utensils all at once. These spills are in turn cleaned up using the soap that would have been used to clean the trays that would have prevented the spill in the first place. Hopefully, this trend will not last long, as the University is often pretty receptive to student suggestions.

U of Richmond: Campus Food is Getting Better.
The food at Richmond is merely average. Over my tenure at Richmond the dining hall has been renovated and now contains a much wider selection of foods on a daily basis, however the hours are still pretty poor. The dining hall closes at 8pm, leaving only the crappy Friday's-esque Cellar or the crappy fastfood-like pier. The pier then promptly closes at 9pm, and the cellar, although it will claim to be open till midnight, makes last call around 11:20. On the weekends the dining hall opens at ten a...

Dean's Den, Tyler's Grill, Dhall
The Dean's Den is only open from 8pm to 1am during the weekdays. If you are hungry and awake during the week before 1am, this place is great. It is practically like a convenient store with frozen microwavable foods, chips, drinks, gum, and medicine. Tyler's Grill (also known as the "pier") closes at 9pm, and on the weekends it doesn't open until right before dinner. Dhall is the only dining hall on campus. It is great but it closes at 8pm, which can be really early if you are into sports th...
