Lifting

One of the important categories that never gets talked about when searching for a college or university to attend is the workout facility. We all know that after a long, boring day in classes, the best way to unwind is a trip to the gym. I was so impressed when I first walked into the Weinstein center.

First, no more fumbling with a student ID, cramming it in the crevices of your workout clothing, because entrance into the facility is by hand print. Second, once inside you will be blown away with the multi-layer set-up for the cardio and weight-room. The cardio area has huge big screen TV's and even personal TV on the exercise equipment. All of the equipment is brand new and in fine condition.

The swimming pool is open for student use, but if swimming isn't your thing, spend time on one of the three full court basketball courts. There are always students there, so finding a pick-up game is never hard, yet the three courts mean you never have to wait long to get involved.

If you're like me and need more than just professors and academics to sell you on the school, check out UR and the Weinstein Center.

UR Gym

The Weinstein Center boasts a fantastic athletic facility for the use of all UR students, faculty, and staff.

Students access the facility by entering their student numbers into a keypad and placing their hands into a palm-reading device. This high tech access in itself is pretty cool- going into my workout, I feel kinda like James Bond.

The check-in system is great; in the semester that Ive been here, not once have I encountered a line for the gym.

The Weinstein Center is open 6am-midnight on weeknights and 10am-midnight on weekends.

Once inside the gym, students find the first floor covered in cardio equipment: treadmills, stationary bikes, ellipticals, stair climbers, and recumbent bikes are all available. There are shelves built into the front wall so that kids can store their sweatshirts, etc. There are 5 or so big screen TVs in the front of the cardio area, and the cardio equipment has audio output, so you can plug in your headphones and listen to the TV of your choice while you sweat. Speaking of sweat, the gym provides an ample supply of towels and drop-off stations. There are multiple stations with paper towels and spray so that exercises can clean their machines.

Climbing the stairs to the second floor, one finds that there are mats and balls for ab workouts, free weights, benches, cable stations, squat racks, and plenty of iso machines as well. There is also an aerobics room upstairs. The machines are kept in good working order and the upstairs area is rarely crowded.

The locker rooms are small but clean and have electronic scales so that you can track your progress. The gym also has a body fat monitor and a blood pressure monitor.

There are also basketball courts, an indoor track, a pool, racquetball courts, pool tables, a sauna, and aerobics rooms in the athletic facility.

Best of all, if youre a full-time student, access to the gym is free. Well, its not really free (included in your tuition), but your fee is effectively being subsidized by everyone too lazy to get up and use the facilities. That in itself should make you smile.

The racquetball courts

Thanks to a super-expensive redesign, UR's gym, the Weinstein Center, now has state of the art equipment and facilities. Still, for all the fancy equipment, my favorite part of the gym is the old racquetball courts. Richmond's gym has four courts, which are almost always open so you can go whenever you want. Equipment such as rackets, balls, goggles, etc, are available to rent for free from the front desk.

Last semester, my girlfriend and I played a half-hour session of racquetball every day around lunchtime and not once did we have to wait for a court to open up. The rental staff at the front desk is very friendly and knowledgeable: after a few visits, they knew us on sight, so we didn't even have to ask for the equipment we needed.

As far as the courts go, the paint is peeling a bit and the walls and floor are covered in black marks, but there is nothing to affect the play of the ball. Even if you can't find a friend to go with, the Weinstein Center racquetball courts are a great place to exercise privately, while still having a lot of fun!
