One of the biggest names to come from Temple is Bill Cosby. What most people do not know, however, is that back in the 1960's, he was a track and field and football star at Temple. Many other notable athletes began their professional careers at Temple. Juan Pepe Sanchez played for the Philadelphia 76ers, then the Detroit Pistons, and in 2004 played for team USA in the summer Olympics in Athens. Aaron McKie has played in the NBA for the Portland Trail Blazers, the Detroit Pistons, the Philadelphia 76ers, and now plays with the LA Lakers. Rick Brunson has played for many NBA teams in his career as well, and now plays for the Houston Rockets. Eddie Jones, who currently plays for the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA, ranks 7th all-time in career three-point shots made. Joe Klecko played in the NFL for the New York Jets and the Indianapolis Colts, and joined the Hall of Fame in 2004. Joe's son Dan Klecko currently plays for the New England Patriots.

Sports at Temple are pretty big, but the school is not really categorized as 'a basketball school' or 'a football school.' Students at Temple have a lot of school spirit though. Whether or not they support or even like the sports teams, Temple students are very enthusiastic about athletics. With just as many club and intramural sports as varsity sports, students have the opportunity to get involved, without having to be recruited or to be a stand-out athlete.

Varsity Sports

Temple is a Division 1 school, and competes in the Atlantic 10 conference, with competitors such as Dayton, Richmond, Rhode Island, and Xavier. The men's basketball team also competes in the Philadelphia Big 5, with the four other schools being La Salle, UPenn, St. Joseph's, and Villanova.

If Temple had to be put into a category, it would be a basketball school. Basketball is definitely the most popular sport at Temple. The men?s basketball team has a history of being very good, although more recently students say the team is not as good as it used to be. Nevertheless, the sport is huge and highly followed at Temple. Last season, the men placed second in the A-10 tournament, and this season, the team has already made it to the first round of the NCAA tournament. Tickets for basketball games can be hard to come by, and almost always sell out. Students can purchase them online, but need to do so usually by a certain date.

The women's basketball team is also very good, although they probably do not get as much recognition as the men?s team. This year marked the third year in a row that the women won the A-10 championships, in addition to a 25-game winning streak last year that held the record for the longest in the country. This season, the team is currently playing in the NCAA championship.

Women's volleyball is another popular sport. In 2002 the team made it to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen, and won the A-10 conference tournament. Men's and women's crew are the most overlooked teams, despite the excellent records they both hold. Football junkies beware, however, because Temple?s team is pretty bad.

In addition to the teams already mentioned, Temple also offers baseball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, soccer, tennis, and track & field for men. For women, cross country, fencing, field hockey, gymnastics, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, and track are also offered.
