Classroom

Although Temple is a big university, classes are not all held in big lecture halls with hundreds of students like it is sometimes assumed. The average class size is about 20-29 students, with a student-teacher ratio of 18:1. Labs are even smaller, usually with 10-20 students. Like most schools, at Temple the core classes that everyone is required to take are generally larger, with less interaction. Classes for upperclassmen tend to be smaller because they are higher levels and more specific courses.

With a combined faculty of over 3,000, it is hard for students to pinpoint the very best teachers. There will always be those teachers that students take because they do not give homework, or those teachers that give homework but are actually interesting, or teachers who make the final exam optional. It is especially hard for underclassmen to choose their second semester schedule because they do not know have enough experience to know who to take.

In Education

Being one of the most popular majors at Temple, the Education program has a lot of good teachers that everyone wants to take. Karen Jantzi is known as one of the better Education teachers. Students like her because she is fair, gives few, if any, tests, and returns assignments back quickly. One of the reasons she is so well-liked is that in addition to teaching the subject well, she relates what is taught to situations that students will actually face in the "real world".

In Journalism

In the Journalism program, one well-liked teacher is Steve Bates. Students have a lot of respect for him because he is not just some teacher who teaches straight from the textbook ? he teaches by using his experience from being in the industry. Bates wins points by being very accessible to students outside the classroom, and he is also known for bringing in good guest speakers.

In Business

Lynne Anderson is known as a favorite business professor, despite the fact that attendance in class is a must. According to students, Lynne Anderson is a good teacher who you will learn a lot from, but you have to go to class every day in order to do well. Exams end up being harder than students think they will be, but they say it is worth it to have an interesting professor that will teach you well.

Although Intellectual Heritage is one of the most dreaded Core classes, it is not that bad if you have Richard Libowitz (RmP) as your professor. He is very knowledgeable when it comes to IH, and this is evident in the way he makes a boring subject interesting, or at least bearable. He encourages discussions in class which is sometimes rare in classes such as IH, and students say he genuinely cares about them and wants them to do well in his class.
