As is the case with its northern counterparts, colleges and universities that reside below the Mason Dixon line place particular importance to their own unique traditions, culture, and history. The southern lifestyle is generally more relaxed and laid back, which many view incorrectly as a weakness. On the contrary, the extreme hospitality exhibited by all people combined with a strong emphasis on manners fosters a more intimate living environment.

The Greek system is very important throughout southern campuses, as they appear to infiltrate a significant portion of community life. Overall, the student bodies appear to be more enthusiastic and proud of their institution, which is readily visible as one walks through campus.

Collegiate athletics are very important to the student body and the majority of students attend major sporting events such as football, basketball, baseball, and soccer. The success/failures of a specific team have a significant effect upon the demeanor of the student body. Fall weekends are dominated by football and tailgating which serve as a meeting place for thousands of alumni to return to reflect on proud memories of their time at their university. The friendships and bonds that students make while at their university are truly special and will be with them for their entire lives. Alumni readily return to the university to reflect on their good times. Overall, it seems that the student body is more connected and engaged with one another.
