I really feel that I should put quotes around nightlife at St. Louis University. I mean don't get me wrong St. Louis has some great bars and a scene for everyone. Whether you like Irish pubs or ultra trendy hot spots STL has it, but when it comes to walking distance your choices are more limited.
First off, there is no Fraternity row and there is only one frat on campus with a house. So unlike big schools, there is not a huge kegger every weekend. Frats and Sorieties will throw parties, 3-4 per group per semsester, but if your not a member or don't know members your not going. Though SLU doesn't have the greek life, students do find a way to party. With three campus apartments complexes you can ussually find a party, but nothing to crazy because of DPS(Department of Public Safety). You can ussually find something a little crazier when you get off campus to the many apartment complexes right across the street(Lindel and Vandeventer).
Once you are old enough to go to a bar you have only 3 choices (Humphrey's, Lacledes and Moolah) that are within walking distance. Humphrey's Bar and Grill is your typical college bar with a large patio and some great drink offers. Every Wednesday night, also known as "Pennies", you can get pitchers of Bud Light for a penny between 11pm to 12am. This is obviously the biggest night for the bar and the most crowded. During the school year, especially the spring, you will want to show up around 9 or 10 to make sure you get a pitcher. Down the street from Humphrey's is Lacledes Bar and Grill. Lacledes is the place to go for good happy hours and to dance. Ussually any good night at Pennies will take you to a blacked out night at Lacledes. Wednesday and Thursday, which is ladies night, are the busy nights during the week. Across campus on Lindel is Moolah, which is a very interesting place. Not only is it two bars its also a movie theater, bowling alley and apartment complex. The bars are on different levels and are referred as the Theater Bar and the Alley Bar. The Theater is more of a classier scene with better booze and better beers on draft. The Alley bar is a little more laid back and can hold a lot more people. On Mondays the Alley bar has "Moolah Madness", which is $10 all you can drink from 9pm to midnight. If you like more physical activities you can always bowl while you drink.
If you are looking for more you can always go off campus. The closest hot spot to SLU's campus is about 5 miles down the road in the Central West End(CWE). The CWE has it all from vodka sushi bars to tapas bars all within a couple of blocks. Also you can feed your hunger with several restaurants that feature a wide variety of tastes. Your other options are Soulard and Downtown.
Historic Soulard is actually just south of downtown St. Louis. In this neighborhood you will find the home of Budweiser, the second largest Mardi Gras in the country and several outstanding bars. All year long you can tour the giant AB brewery, that is so large it has its own zip code. Every Febuary the streets come alive for Mardi Gras. A week long event features several parades, concerts and plenty of beads. Being the second largest Mardi Gras in the country you can lose yourself in the sea of people, hurricanes and boobs. For every other day of the year you have great bars to keep the people entertained. You can enjoy the massive patio at McGurks or stare at the artsy design of Venice Cafe, Soulard doesn't come short on variety.
The Downtown area really needs to be broken up into three categories; Washington avenue, the Landing and Up all night. Washington avenue is a fairly new neighborhood featuring loft apartments and is quickly become a new hot spot in St. Louis. Just like the CWE their is a wide variety of the bars on Washington avenue. Whether you want to climb and explore at the City Museum or listen to an Irish band at the Dubliner you can find it on Washington Avenue. For the sports fans Busch Stadium, Scott Trade Center and the Edwards Jones Dome are all within walking distance.
If you follow Washington Avenue west you will find your self on the cobblestone streets of the Landing. The Landing is one of the largest bar and club scenes in St. Louis. Whether you want to rock out to dueling pianos at the Big Bang or dance the night away at Buca you can do it all here. If 3 am is too early for you to stop partying you can always go to an Up all night.
The Up all nights are actually scattered a little. The closest are the President Casino and the new Lumiere Place Casino. The President has been around forever and is almost a St. Louis landmark. Climb aboard the giant silver boat and try your luck at craps, slots and cards. Lumiere is the newest addition to the downtown area and is impossible to miss. With a giant LED wing that surrounds the hotel, you will always know where Lumiere Place is. Not only does it have the standard casino games you can also find wide variety of specialty restaurants and clubs. If gambling isn't really your thing you can always cross the river to stay up later.
Right across the river in Sauget, IL you will find a collection of locations that seem to never close. Sticking with the bar/night club scene you can visit Pops night club. Not only does Pops offer a late night bar and club scene, you can also find a band playing every night. If this seems a little tame for you you can always walk across the street to one of the two strip clubs. I feel I don't need to go into it anymore than that.
