As your typical 18 year old high school student i was terrified of going away to college. i had decided to attend a small school in central florida. being a traditional mid-western girl this was probably the biggest mistake i could have made. needless to say i hated it, everything about the school was the opposite of what i expected college to be and what suited my personality.

After a semester i decided to transfer back home (st. louis) and go to saint louis university. being a mid-year transfer was a frightening experience. i missed out on the traditional welcome to our school orientation, welcoming ceremonies and any help what so ever. essentially i was handed a room key and was told my roommate would arrive in the next 3 days. this would be disarming for most people but it suited me. I finally moved all my stuff in and met my roommate and realized within five minutes of my first day of school that this was where i belonged.

Saint louis university has a culture and environment that is not only laid back but very welcoming. i found that students were willing to help you with directions or general advice, like which fraternity boys to avoid, and were easy to get along with. i made friends quickly with my roommate and all her friends and easily made friends of my own.

The one things i enjoyed most about slu was that there wasn't a constant pressure to join a sorority. i have never understood greek life and probably never will, especially sororities. so many of my friends at other school jumped right into greek life and thought i was crazy for not even rushing. but, at slu you don't have to be greek to have a social life. i hung out with who ever i wanted to greek or not, i was wlecome to attend greek events, and for the most part nobody cared either way.

Social life at slu is a lot of fun. unlike many schools, slu is in the middle of a city and not a college town. we did not have the traditional greek houses or a community based around the school, which in my opinion made it alot of fun. of course we had the traditional college bars Humphreys and Lacledes where i spent many nights, days and classes at. but, there is so many other places to go. for the tradional club scene there is washington avenue, there is always lacledes landing which is a bar and club district on the river front, and there is soulard, home of st. louis' mardi gras and many cool bars.

Also, there are many other thing to do in st. louis that does not involve bars or drinking. forest park is one of st. louis' best assets. at the park there is the zoo, which is free, the art museum, history museum, science center, and more. i spent many weekends and free days in forest park just wondering around with my friends. it is still one of my favorite places to be in st. louis.

After my time at slu i realized that not only did i receive a great education but i learned a lot about myself. by coming to slu i learned that making the wrong choice is not the end of the world. it is an opportunity to learn something about yourself, and to learn how not to do something. making mistakes is what we do, we're human. at 18 i thought that picking a college was a permanent decision that i would be stuck with for the next 4 years. and i was wrong, pick the college that you think is best for you and if you end up being wrong transfer (i suggest saint louis university). just remember its not the end of the world its just college.
