My first year at saint joe`s was very memorable and helped me grow overall as a person. I was able to make many new friends that I hope to keep even after I graduate and as well as enter into my first year of independence without any major obstacles. In the beginning i was very nervous about leaving my small hometown with all my friends and family to go to this new city and school where I would know absolutely no one! But in the end, looking back at the past year, I can say that I am very happy I made the big leap, because years from now I would of regretted it immensely.

Winter Quad

Many prospective students may wonder what a typical day is like for a college student. At SJU class start at 8am for those who can wake themselves up that early and usually go until 4 or 5, later if you have any kind of science labs. On Tuesdays and Thursdays there is a free period for all students from 11:15am to 1 pm where, especially in the cool spring weather, you will find many students outside on the grass or benches, studying or just talking with friends.

In between afternoon classes, most on-campus students have lunch in the Crimson and Grey cafeteria, where there is a buffet-style eating arrangement and students can use their SJU ID card to purchase lunch. Every now and then SJU liked to spice things up a bit and bring entertainment to the cafeteria or nearby. These include local bands or even some specialty ones. SJU always has something fun going on outside during free period in the spring especially. From tie-dye to free water ice, there is always something to keep your attention.

After most classes are over, most underclassman go back to their dorms or apartments. There are study areas in these buildings or if you need a more quiet place to work, the library is open at most hours with extra hours during midterm and finals time.

There is always something to do at SJU and with the great people that make up the campus, you will always find people who share your interests.

Going to any college is an exciting and also frightening time for students. Many people wonder whether they will fit into any group or whether they will find a sense of belonging. I also had these questions whirling around in my head before I started Saint Joe's University. I also commuted to campus during my freshman year so I felt that I would have a harder time fitting in. However, I soon realized that becoming a part of the sju community was not nearly as hard as I thought it was going to be.

During my first few weeks at SJU I began to make friends with all different types of people, something that I did not have the opportunity to do in high school. I never thought that those fears I had at the beginning of the semester would subside so quickly. I had thoughts that I would not fit in especially because I was commuting, but I felt as though I lived there because of the welcome that I received from my new-found friends.

So to those who feel that it takes your entire college experience to find that group you fit in with, I want to let you know that that is not the case at SJU. While every person is different and needs to find that college that fits their personality and needs, I, personally found that sense of belonging at SJU, and feel it is my duty to ease any doubts that future students may have about finding their place at SJU. With the mix of support from friends and teachers at SJU it was easy for me to feel welcome within the first weeks of freshman year and hope that those who want to attend SJU will have the same reaction.
