The Silence Kit plays textured, moody rock music. The band is based in New Jersey and Philadelphia, PA, and was started by Patrick McCay in 2002, as a home recording project. Inspired in equal parts by post punk, shoegaze, neo-psychedelia, avant-garde and indie rock, countless shows have been played and more than a few band members have come and gone through the years. The Silence Kit released their debut LP "In Regulated Measure," in February of 2006. The album was very well received and garnered many positive reviews. The press favorably compared the band to the likes of The Cure, Joy Division, The Sound, Chameleons, Echo and the Bunnymen, Nick Cave, David Lynch film soundtracks, and more. After the release, the band played many shows, sharing the stage with bands like I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness, Early Day Miners, Windsor for the Derby and more, and debuting a large amount of new material that the band had written, a lot of which is available as free downloads on their websites. "In Regulated Measure" is now available on iTunes and Amazon.com and the band's second album, titled "A Strange Labor," is scheduled for a Winter 2007 release.

Philadelphia Slick Rocks World Cafe Live

The Venue

Entering World Caf Live on 30th and Walnut the first thing that enters your mind is, man this place is clean. You then find out that not only is it a clean concert venue, but it also is much bigger then it appears to be when looking in from outside. World Caf Live has two main concert sections which I saw. The first, and smaller section is located upstairs and is much more of a lounge situation then a concert hall. There is a small bar, and tables where you can order very good (and somewhat expensive) food and drinks. At the front of this lounge area is a small stage, about 12 inches off the ground, where performers pack together to entertain. The second of the two stages is a bit more hidden. If you walk past the ticket desk, and continue down the set of stairs in front of you, youll find the entrance to the main stage. Complete with a bar, and a balcony area, the main stage is where you go to get wild and jump around to your favorite musicon the night in question, there was a local battle of the bands going on (quite an interesting scene, which I only attended for a few minutes just to get the feel for it). I returned to the Upstairs lounge to see what I was there to see, Philadelphia Slick opening for Ohmega Watts.

The Show

The atmosphere was much different then I had expected. The first time I saw Philadelphia Slick was on their record release party at North Star bar. Needless to say it was much more high energy then the lounge show at World Caf Live. Philly Slick consists of a 7 person Jazz band and 2 MCs who combine to make some of the most chill, energetic, and dynamic hip hop and jazz fusions since Jurassic Five and The Roots. Philly Slick played a 45 minute set which very much on point, but far too short my likings. Even though the venue clearly wasnt primed for the type of energy they can bring, they still brought it, and put on a great show. Ohmega Watts came on next, but I was much less impressed by his attempt to put on a good show by rapping over beats which were coming from his Apple Mac which replaced the instruments that packed the stage for Philadelphia Slicks performance. I left after 3 songs. All in all, Im sure Ohmega Watts puts on a great show and Ive heard his album which is full of solid tracks, just stood no chance following a great band like Philadelphia Slick.
