Sleeping in the Airport

The Rome Center was a great experience while I was in college. I made a sudden decision the summer before my junior year and filled out my application. I was planning on going with one of my best friends, then another applied as well. The three of us went to Rome the Spring semester of junior year. It was probably the most fun I had in college, traveling to Florence, Pompeii, Assisi, Athens, Amsterdam, Barcelona and Budapest.

I got to spend time with some of my closest friends, make lots of new ones, and experience new cultures that I had never known before. One of my favorite things was going to BP's, the pizzeria closest to our calcio (soccer) fields. We played calcio every Wednesday night with teams made from JFRC residents (and sometimes staff). After all the games were finished, we walked down to NP's. Some nights we would play ninja and run down to BP's and attempt to hide behind tiny cars and trees. We had liters of wine and beer, excellent pizza, and played a lot of checkers.

On our last night of soccer we went to BP's and had almost all 200 members of our campus out celebrating. A friend purchased a Queen CD from some guy walking through and selling CDs, and the owners actually let us replace the same CD they always played with it. We all stood on the chairs and benches singing along at the top of our lungs. After a pretty intense game of checkers, some of us were playing circle of death at one of the main long tables. I eventually turned this in to the longest table of flip cup I have ever seen. Good thing I was wearing a black shirt, since we played no-hands flip cup and there was wine all down the front of my shirt. The owners let us stay as long as we wanted, and this started out as a great way to celebrate our time together before saying goodbye.

If you go to Loyola, you'd be a fool not to sign up for the Rome program. It's the * In fact, I wish I was there right now. Aside from making great friends, which most people seem to when they go, there's also the pleasure of wandering the streets of Rome all alone, just getting completely lost in this ancient city. Go to Rome, only take the bare essentials, see the city and travel the rest of Europe while you're there. My only complaint was that some of my classes had even more homework than regular college courses, which kind of cock blocked me from traveling as much as I wanted to. Flaminio Di Biagi is an exceptional professor. If you go, I recommend you take whatever he's teaching.

Experience La Citta Eterna

Studying abroad at the Loyola Rome Center was the highlight of my college career. The RC is located in a quiet neighborhood in Rome. A grocery store and various other shops are within walking distance. If you are feeling ambitious you can walk straight to the Vatican. Central Rome is a bus or taxi ride away. The accommodations at the RC aren’t glamorous and the mensa has yet to earn a Zagat rating, but the sense of community that develops each semester is irreplaceable.

Studying abroad is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Italy is absolutely enchanting. Immerse yourself in the culture and learn the language. The food is delicious, so forget the diet and eat all the carbohydrates and gelato possible. Take advantage of Loyola’s great international program and experience a semester or two of “la dolce vita.”
