As there has been a growing need for concern on college campuses with regard to safety, Loyola has taken several steps to increase security and make students feel safer in their surroundings. A major concern for the Loyola population is its location. Rogers Park is not the worst neighborhood in the world, but it is certainly not the best. Knowing this, campus security has installed over 400 one-button emergency telephones in every building and dorm and throughout the entire Loyola campus. These telephones will alert security of your whereabouts on campus so that they can quickly assist you. Campus security also patrols campus and the surrounding areas regularly to ensure students’ safety.

Loyola also offers “hot spot” tours of the neighborhood to show students which areas to avoid and classes for women on self-defense tactics. This class was one of the first activities I participated in at Loyola, knowing that this information could be important during my time in Rogers Park. Thankfully, I never had to use what I learned, but it is really important for everyone to be aware of their surroundings and what they can do to make themselves safer. Loyola acknowledges this need as evidenced by their efforts to inform students of various safety tips, incidents on campus, and by offering different services aimed at protecting their students.
