A couple of times each year Loyola’s student organizations gather to publicize and recruit new members. With over 175 student organizations, Loyola’s student body has ensured that there is something for everyone to get involved in. Loyola’s organizational directory includes clubs involved in service, politics, academics, sports, causes (medical, environmental, etc.) and those centered on different cultures. The development of new organizations and activities is also strongly encouraged to entertain the interests of all students.

In the past, the organization fair has been held on the Halas field track where students set up their booths with information about their organizations, club paraphernalia, and some sort of incentive to visit their organization (usually candy). Promise of free stuff brings out the masses at Loyola, so it’s best to go early!

At the very least, if getting involved in student organizations isn’t your thing, the organization fair is a great place to meet people.

hillel college community

Imagine yourself in a place full of goyim- blonde hair, normal shaped noses, pork- you get the idea. And then, over the hill, you see a little boisterous woman; about 5'4 give or take, an afro of curly locks, and energy for days. Welcome, my friends, to Loyola Chicago's Hillel.

Nested deep in the patchwork of Chicago’s Jesuit University, is a strong, convicted, and extremely active Hillel Chapter. It is led by none other than Patti Ray, who most consider a downright legend. Patti is the captain of a very integrated Jewish ship. Everyone from strict orthodox to completely secular, and don’t forget the Russian immigrants, have made Hillel their home. There is always food, friends, and of course arguing!

Hillel can provide student assistance for any and every thing that you ever thought you did or didn’t need assistance with. Like a good Jewish mother, Patti is always there. Shabbat dinners, cultural excursions, volunteer programming, BBQ’s on the beach, joint programs with other Loyola clubs, and a home away from home during what can be a difficult time. My college experience was enriched immensely through my affiliation with Hillel.

It would be negligent of me not mention that sometimes it is reminiscent of a Jewish summer camp, or Hebrew school field trip. However, what Jewish function isn’t?

Hillel makes Loyola a comfortable place for Jews, and has worked hard to really reach out to the Loyola community in terms of awareness and acceptance. They have a solid foundation and non-Jews are always welcome to any Hillel event. Which is great, because that’s the majority of the school!

I would strongly recommend checking out Hillel, and if you find yourself face to face with Patti Ray tell her I say hi! ?

Phoenix

While I went to Loyola University to get a college degree, I would argue that my real education came from spending late night hours in the basement of the Loyola Phoenix. As the official student newspaper, the Loyola Phoenix has won multiple awards, most notably as the best college newspaper in the state of Illinois. The writers and editors have gone on to journalism schools at universities like Northwestern and Columbia. If you check wikipedia, the Phoenix is listed as one of the main "liberal newspapers in Chicago." Which coming from a Jesuit university is no easy task. A weekly newspaper, the Phoenix is a great way to gain staff writing experience without the rush of a daily newspaper. The Phoenix is completely run by students and is always looking for writers, editors and photographers. I learned more from my two years at the Phoenix then I ever did sitting in any English or Communication class and it looks great on my resume.
