I used to kind of hate Hamilton's. Every time I went, I left feeling like I just smoked two packs of Camels without the filters. Now, however, they've banned indoor smoking in Chicago and I think I'm gonna go check it out next time I'm back in Chi town.
Chicago is a big and great city.
If you're looking for things to spend your time on money on at night, get on the el and leave campus. Near the Addison stop of the red line is the Music Box, a great art house theater. Also near Addison is the Metro, an all ages rock venue. Closer to campus at the Lawrence el stop are the Aragon Ballroom (saw my first show there, Nirvana in sixth grade), the Riviera, where Elliot Smith played one of his last shows, opening for Wilco, and the famous Green Mill, an old jazz joint where Capone used to hang out and where today's jazz greats play. I still regret missing Charlie Hunter playing there a couple years ago. The Green Mill is a great place to take a date, though you both have to be 21, so only upper classmen need apply.
If you're looking to hang out around campus in Rogers park, there's Metropolis coffee shop and Standees 24 hour diner on Granville just South of Campus, Enui coffee shop on Sheridan North of campus and the Heartland Cafe, which offers open mics and is a chill place to drink coffee, beer and/or enjoy a quality meal. There really are so many things to do, all accessible by El. Cubs games are super fun even though they usually lose. Sox games are less fun but they win more. If you are looking for things to do in Chicago, it pays to ask, what would Ferris Bueller do? The Art Institute in the Loop is an easy El ride and is probably Chicago's finest cultural asset. To spend an afternoon at the Art Institute is to see a fraction of what it has to offer. You'll need multiple trips to take it in. Also in the Loop is the Museum of Contemporary Art, which offers a changing variety of show, which range from inspiring to dull. Navy Pier has a free museum of stained glass windows, which is pretty interesting. Another place you need to hit in the Loop is the Auditorium Theater. It's gorgeous inside and has some of the most bad ass acoustics anywhere. Bands such as Wilco and Radiohead play there in addition to musical theater shows and the ballet. The Auditorium is a great place to spend a Chicago evening.

Loyola's main campus is located in Rogers Park, a neighborhood in the north part of the city. The first thing I fell in love with was the view of Loyola's campus - Hello, Lake Michigan! Take some time to play on the local beach (or, if you are from a beach area and very particular about it, the shore). A little time on the beach getting to know your classmates with some frisbee and sunbathing may spark your interest in the rest of the neighborhood.
Just like the rest of Chicago, Roger's Park is a great place for food. With the diversity of our neighborhood, you will find most any kind of food you crave. While some say Giordano's is the best, I would go with Carmen's stuffed spinach pizza with creamy garlic sauce. The creamy garlic is so special that only one of the men in the kitchen knows the recipe - if they run out on his day off, you're out of luck! It is worth the wait. They also have pizza by the slice, so if you need to grab some quick lunch you are in luck. The buffet is very popular on the weekends, a lot of students go in to fuel up when they study. When feeling less studious, there is a selection of beer and wine to enjoy. Regardless of your choice, Carmen's is always a good yet cheap eat.
Perhaps you're in the mood for something a little more exotic taste, try one of the Thai, Ethiopian, or Mediterranean restaurants. My favorite Thai restaurant is Thai Grill, on the Granville end of campus. You can easily stop in to just grab a delicious bubble tea, or stay for a meal: start with an appetizer of their excellent crab won tons or one of the combination appetizer platters. For your main treat, enjoy the best pad thai I've ever had, or their sweet and sour chicken. You also have the option to enjoy your dinner with any beer or wine you would like, with their convenient BYOB policy. There's no going wrong with Thai Grill.
If you are looking for something easy to eat while getting a good drink, go to Hamilton's. There are tasty specials everyday for food and drinks, and the kitchen is open until midnight. Some favorites I experienced were dollar burger nights, which I enjoyed every night after Monday night classes. Wing night is also a favorite, getting cheap wings and beverages mid-week. The specials are great every night, so pick your favorite and make it a weekly event with your friends.
For more options, just take a stroll through your new neighborhood. The best way to find your favorite new place is to get familiar with your surroundings and taste all that is out there. Take these tips and add to the list!

Standees diner is open twenty-four seven. It's just South of campus on Granville. The first time I ever went was at 3 AM. This old dude stumbled out of the bathroom in tighty whities and I thought, why are they showing me my future? The food is what you find at an greasy spoon, decent pancakes, coffee is average. The waiters/waitresses there are really nice, so tip them well you cheapskates! Also south of campus on Broadway is Ras Dashen Eithiopian Resteraunt. If you're hung over or your body is stressed, this is a very healthy place to eat. It tastes good and you get to eat with your hands. North of campus, you've got Leona's, an Italian chain. Further North and a little West is the Heartland Cafe. If you take the el up to Evanston, you can hit up Buffalo Joe's, a great wings joint with reasonable prices.
