The Loyola Lakeshore campus is tucked into one of Chicago's (and the country's) most diverse neighborhood, East Roger's Park. When driving by on Sheridan road, at first glance it seems pretty urban, but at about 3 cubic city blocks in size, Loyola's beauty is in its depth.

Resting on the shores of Lake Michigan, the campus has and excellent view and some amazing architecture interspersed between the concrete monstrosities built for utility in the 1970's. Several buildings of note would be the Madonna Della Strada Chapel, built to face out at the lake, if you stand in just the right spot you can hear your voice echoing in surround sound. Also the Cudahy science building with its dome, and the Mundelein Center, which used to be home to the Mundelein College for women, and is rumored to be haunted by an old nun.

As always, one of the most important places on campus is the student union. Loyola's Centennial Forum Student Union (CFSU to resident Loyolans) hosts one of the freshman dorms (Mertz), two dining halls, the Rambler Room, and Lake Shore Dining hall (LSD), a rec room (Zipoli's), the student newspaper office, the theater, and a general store (Union Station). The day-to-day life of the students here almost always involves a stop at this campus hot spot.

On any given day you will find a lot of students hanging out at 'the ashtray' a large bench outside Centennial Forum Student Union which hosts a statue of our namesake, St. Ignatius Loyola. This is where everyone goes to smoke between classes and meet up with friends. Another hot spot in the spring and early fall is the 'Jes Res' lawn, a large park that sits on the lake in front of the Jesuit Residence building. A lot of campus events are held here, as well as just being a great spot to play Frisbee or catch some rays.

Loyola University Chicago: Water Tower

The Loyola School of Social Work is located right in the heart of downtown Chicago. Next door is the Law and Business school where students spend their days in the library and socialize in the student lounge. Many students choose to live in other parts of the city, but there is the option of the newly built student dorms across the street. Classes meet from the early hours of the morning and late hours of the evening. Professors are easily accessible in their offices and via email.

After classes the School of Social Work students head over to Jake Mellnick's corner tap for drinks and appetizers. Jake's is the home of some of the hottest hot wings in the country. If you are not in the mood for hot wings there are a number of other restaurants and bars including Streeter's. Streeter's is an underground pub where one can find a game of beer pong in the late evening hours. Before hitting up the bar scene do a little shopping at the seven story Water Tower Place mall also home to many restaurants and coffee shops. If it is sweets you seek just a step away from the school there is a Hershey's store and Ghiradelli home of one of the greatest ice cream sundaes. One of the greatest aspects of Chicago is the public transportation system. The elevated train runs twenty four hours a day and lines running to almost every part of the city. My experience at Loyola has been wonderful primarily due to the people I have met through class and internship experiences. So I recommend when you get the chance to come and visit sweet home Chicago.
