Being located in the very large city of Chicago, you always find something to do during your free-time while attending Loyola. However, it's a well known fact that college students can be lazy at times, and sometimes you just don't feel like taking the "L" to go anywhere. So what is a bored student to do? Hit up Halas for some intramural sports of course. My intramural sport of choice was dodgeball, although there are plenty of other team and single player sports to choose from. It's a great way to meet new people as there are always sign-up sheets with people looking for teammates. I can still remember how pumped up my friends and I would get for those Thursday night dodgeball matches. That one hour of domination (let's face it, we were pretty much unbeatable) was the reason and motivation for us for the time in between game nights. To some it may seem insignificant, but I will never forget those game nights.

Loyola's gym is pretty great. It gives you many fitness options to choose from. There are two rooms full of cardio equipment (treadmills, stationary bikes, elliptical machines). These rooms have TVs and the main room has observation windows so people can watch you work out and shame you with their eyes. Luckily there's glass so they can't throw tomatoes. There's a pretty good-sized free weight room. You know it's starting to get crowded when you hear a meat head go off about how he's juicing. At that point, it's best to go to the weight machines room, filled with Cybex machines, mats, mirrors, and the occasional hot girl. The wait to use equipment is usually minimal.
The gym also has racket ball rooms (killer!), a really hard punching bag that will rape your knuckles, ping pong tables (bitchin!) and a lap pool. Rackets and paddles are all available at the desk. I think you just need your student ID. The shower situation used to be pretty old school a.k.a. a one room 16 head free for all with little to no control of the water temp. A couple years ago, they overhauled the locker rooms so now everyone gets their own stall and the water temperature is adjustable. Arr, kids today have it too easy! One thing I recommend is in the Winter, when the wind is sending its frozen blades through every seam in your clothing, head to the gym locker room and barricade yourself in the sauna. Don't come out until April...better make it May.
The picture I used for this article is showing you the gym facilities at the Loyola University Rome Center. I spent a semester there; awesome time.
