Getting around the city is easy. Most places are easily within walking distance. Students also have access to the Metro (subway) and the bus system. The Metro stop is on campus, located on the corner of 23rd and I streets. From there, you can go anywhere: directly downtown, to the National Mall, to the Eastern Market, to the Airport, to Pentagon City Shopping Mall, etc. There are also cabs for those willing to fork out between $8 and $16 dollars to get where they need to go. (The cab system in DC doesn't charge based on a meter, it charges based on how many zones you cross.)

4-RIDE

One of the best features of the Foggy Bottom Campus is the 4-RIDE program operated by the University Police Department (UPD). After dark (7pm), just call 994-RIDE (or 4-RIDE from any University phone), tell the driver where you are, and where you?re going. UPD will then come pick you up and take you to your final destination. Although this program is great and somewhat efficient during the nice fall and spring months, it gets very overcrowded in the winter when it?s cold outside and no one wants to walk. Wait times can be almost an hour in those situations, so call early.

The Colonial Express

Partly due to the overcrowding of the 4-Ride program, the University started the Colonial Express, a series of vans that drive around a set course on campus picking up kids and dropping them off. There are two Colonial Express loops, one serving the northern half of Foggy Bottom Campus and one serving the southern. If you see a Colonial Express, all you have to do is flag them down, show your Student ID, and jump in!

If you're headed to or from the Mount Vernon Campus, there is a convenient shuttle that runs 24 hours a day. Monday through Friday, there is continuous shuttle service between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Shuttles will come about every ten minutes. The shuttle runs less frequently during evening and nighttime hours. The bus stop for the Foggy Bottom Campus is 23rd & H Streets (Fulbright Hall), and the Mount Vernon Campus stop is in front of Ames Hall.

Yes, students may park their cars at their dorms or at a G.W. parking facility. That is the good news. The bad news is that it costs $800 per semester. Permits begin on the first day of class and end the last day of exams, so if you stick around to hand out with friends, be careful you don?t get towed. On the Mount Vernon campus, parking is a bit less expensive. It costs $357 per semester instead of a full $800.
