Information

Students Thrive on Technology

Students at Drexel University thrive on technology and the Internet. Just from searching around MySpace, Flickr or YouTube you can tell that the students are very into technology and know how to use it professionally and socially. Drexel students have a strong presense on these and other Online networks.

Any Computer You want

Drexel University suggests that all students purchase a laptop, though it is not required. Students are not required to have a certain type of laptop. Drexel does suggest that students highly consider computers from: Apple, Dell, Gateway or IBM. Each of these companies provides student deals as well as the equipment standards Drexel suggests. This allows students to purchase whatever type of notebook they are most comfortable with.

It's All Wireless

Drexel University was the first university to make the entire campus wireless. With a wireless, named the DragonFly connection students can sit in class, their dorm or in the quad and be connected to the internet, eliminating the hassle of Ethernet cords.

Drexel uses Orinoco wireless cards. Newer computers often have wireless cards built in.

DrexelOne Mobile

Drexel also allows for members of the University to access the web via hand held personal computer devices. Drexel calls this system DrexelOne Mobile. To use DrexelOne Mobile set your PDA to: http://mobile.one.drexel.edu

Internet Protection

The Computer Tech center has created a Virtual Private Network. Your computer encrypts your data using the 168-bit encryption standard. This allows information to remain confidential over such a large network.

Borrowing a Laptop

Students may borrow a lap top in the Creese Student Union or the Library through the Electronic Learning Center on the lower level. Students must use their Dragon Card in exchange for the computer. The computers are not allowed to leave the buildings which they are being borrowed from. This is very helpful if you want to catch up on some work without lugging your computer around all day. It also helps if all the computers at the computer stations are in use. Students may borrow a variety of computers, including Macs.

Laptops may be borrowed for up to three hours. Before the three hours is up, students have the ability to renew for more time. If other students are waiting, you cannot renew.

Podcast

Drexel is one of the leading universities in the country when it comes to technology. Beyond computers all over campus for students to use and an entirely wireless campus, Drexel is also stepping into new ways of technology.

Drexel has teamed up with Apple to create podcasting for the University. Professors are starting to record their lectures. Some professors are using podcasting as a replacement for classroom lectures, yet some use it as a supplement or reinforcement. As they record their lectures, you may download them straight to your computer. There is also the option of using an iPod for which you must download the podcasting technology from iTunes.

Professors may go beyond the solely audio podcasts to include visuals as well.
