Safety is the Goal

Drexel University takes the safety of the members of its community very seriously. The members of the department of public safety aim to protect at all times. It is important however to be aware of your surroundings; be smart and use common sense and know how to prevent crime.

At night Drexel's campus is said to look like a brightly lit football stadium. Lights don't always make people feel 100% safe. The security team at Drexel University is always ready, willing and able to help.

Emergency Call Boxes

There are 40 emergency call boxes located around campus. On top of each box is a blue light. If someone pushes the emergency button on the box, the light flashes, the security department knows the exact location and a member of the security department will respond within 20 seconds. At any location on campus, you should easily be able to see at least two emergency call boxes. Please note, however, that the emergency call boxes are only available on the Main Campus.

Walking Escorts

Students, faculty and staff may request a walking escort. These escorts are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The escort will accompany you to any location on Drexel's campus.

Drexel Campus Shuttle

The campus shuttles, described more clearly in the "Transportation and Parking" section, are another means of making students feel safe at Drexel. The shuttle brings students to area both on and off campus.

In order to board the shuttle, students must have a valid DragonCard. Drexel students may also utilize both the PennBus East and West offered by the University of Pennsylvania. The shuttles are free of change.

DragonCard

The DragonCard is your lifeline at Drexel. Not only is it used for your meal plan and renting computers, but it is also used to gain access into buildings. One cannot get into the on-campus housing buildings without a DragonCard. Students are not allowed into other buildings such as the gym.

By strictly enforcing these rules, Drexel is able to reduce the threat of an outsider's ability to enter a building.

Security Officers

Security officers are constantly patrolling the campus. They are clad is bright yellow jackets which make them very distinct figures. There are approximately 80 officers.

Drexel's campus is also patrolled by Philadelphia Police officers. These officers are either on foot or on bicycle. Since it is a city, there are typically patrolling police cars within a short distance.
