Pi Kappa Alpha

Pi Kappa Alpha was founded at the University of Virginia, March 1, 1868. The reason for their desire to start a fraternity is eloquently described in Pi Kappa Alpha's preamble:

For the establishment of friendship on a firmer and more lasting basis; for the promotion of brotherly love and kind feeling; for the mutual benefit and advancement of the interests of those with whom we sympathize and deem worthy of our regard; We have resolved to form a Fraternity; believing that, thus we can most successfully accomplish our object.

On November 10, 2001, the colony of Pi Kappa Alpha at Drexel University officially received their charter and became a full fledged chapter. This was a day to enjoy the successes of the present, look back on the achievements of the past, and look forward to the potential of the future. Few brothers at the time could believe that within five years of existence, the Lambda Zeta chapter would be recognized by the international fraternity as one of the top 6% three years in a row. The founding fathers can official state that they created a Legacy.

Since then, Pike has thrived on Drexel, now in 2008 with over 100 brothers. The lambda Zeta chapter has won the Robert Adger Smythe award 4 years in a row since 2003. The Smythe Cup is awarded to the top 15% of chapters in the US. Pi kappa Alpha has over 200 active chapters presently in the US. The Lambda Zeta chapter also won the Deans Cup at Drexel in 2004 and 2006.

Brothers can be seen all over campus wearing the Garnet and Old Gold colors of Pi Kappa Alpha.

Tau Kappa Epsilon

TKE is the oldest fraternity in the nation and at Drexel it is the longest running fraternity in all of greek life. It is also the only Drexel fraternity that owns its own house and has at least a leg to stand on when Drexel tries to crack down on the fraternity scene. It has been at drexel since the Great Depression era, and resides in a mansion donated to the fraternity. Though you will not find the "animal house" type fraternity that populated campuses in the past, you will find a good group of brothers and a lot of fun things going on all the time.

Besides the parties and other fun activities TKE has to offer, (which are best experienced and not talked about) TKE has a long history of athletic domination, among other things, winning 5 straight IFC football championships.

There is also the support--both in networking and advisory--of its long tradition of 1800+ alumni from Drexel.

Two National TKE Alumni of note are Ronald Reagan, as well as Will Ferrell, who on youtube does a funny visit to a TKE fraternity house as a promo for OLD SCHOOL... not sure if it is still posted though....

Every year, typically during the first week of May, the Greek life sector of Drexel University, participates in a week long competition of approximately 25 events. The events range from clothing drives, talent shows, penny wars and auctions. This week is not merely a competition; it is also a week which brings each sorority and fraternity together for fun and bonding.

Greek week shows the presence of Greek life on Drexel campus. During Rush, the members typically sing the praises of the extreme fun had during the week.

Greek Housing

Drexel also manages properties for eight sororities and fraternities. The location of these Greek houses is on N. 34th Street. Though the University owns the property, the selection process for who lives in the house remains up to each Greek group.

Community Service

The Greek sector of Drexel University provides more donations than any other on campus organization. Beyond, material giving, Greeks are known for their community service. At least once a month, each chapter comes together in order to perform service to better the Philadelphia community.

It's Not All About Being Greek

Drexel University, like all other universities has their Greek chapters. Greek life is a dominant aspect of many colleges, but Drexel is not one of them. Joining a sorority of fraternity can enhance your collegiate experience, but will not make or break it. You do not have to join a Greek organization in order to have a social life in college. The parties are often thrown so that both Greeks and non-Greeks have a chance to socialize together.

Exposing the Greek Myths

Sororities and fraternities do not choose pledges based on looks. People are chosen based on personalities that seem to mix well with current members. It\'s not all about hazing. Hazing is really a part of the past. The real importance of rushing is getting to know the pledges. How are you going to get to your potential members when you are bullying them? Hazing is not permitted at Drexel.

Though there are many social events which Drexel Greeks are involved with, it\'s not just one big drink-fest. Some of the events do include alcohol, but not all of them. Being in a sorority or fraternity is just like hanging out with your friends; do you always need alcohol around?
