Captain Blake

When i first enrolled at Drexel University i thought to myself, who would want to go to college for 5 years? Here i am almost done my 5th year and i finally realize that 5 is better than 4. One of the main reasons 5 is better than 4 is because of the co-op program at Drexel. If you are not aware, this is how it works. Freshman year you go to classes from September through June. Savor that summer break because it will be your last.

Senior year works the same way. You are in classes from September through June, and then you graduate. Sophmore, Pre-Junior, and Junior year is where the co-op cycle kicks in. For 6 months out of the year you will be in classes. For the other 6 months you will be working full time, 40 hours a week. Drexel's Steinbright Career Development Center is great with helping students find jobs, and the online database where you can apply is a great tool. My first co-op was for a recruiting firm. The company was a start-up and basically we functioned as the HR department for our clients. The most i got out of that was improved communication skills, and the ability to talk with all different types of people. My second co-op was in the litigation department for a an accounting firm.

My third and final co-op, and where i am still currently employed, is Digitas Health. Digitas Health is a next generation marketing agency. We help build healthcare brands that patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals feel confident turning to and recommending when they are sick, in need, or helping others. Digitas Health has offices in Philadelphia, New York, and Chicago.

Most of our clients are major pharmaceutical companies such as AstraZeneca, Merck, Eli Lily, Sanofi-Aventis, Wyeth, Bristol Myers-Squibb, and more. I am part of the SEO (search engine optimization) team at Digitas Heath. We are a small but growing team in the media department. In a nutshell, it is our job to have our clients web sites rank high up in the organic results in search engines. A lot goes into this, and it is an ongoing process.

Like many Drexel students, i am still working for the company i did a co-op with even after the co-op cycle finished. I have met a lot of great people and learned a lot at the same time. Drexel University is a great school to go to because it really does prepare you for the real world. Furthermore, Digitas Health is a great place to work and i am glad i am here.

Speed Ball

Aside from giving me a pretty solid business and marketing foundation, there is not a whole lot I can say about the coursework at Drexel. Some classes were phenomenal; some not so much. I think that is pretty standard. Ultimately, it was the Drexel co-op program that really brought value to my educational experience and enabled me to accelerate my career in ways I could have never imagined.

The idea is ingenious. Get a glimpse of the working world; apply your knowledge; identify the job qualities you like and dislike, and graduate with at least a better understanding of what you may (or may not) want to do with your life. Meanwhile, you gain relevant experience for an extended period of time that many other job candidates will not have to offer. The opportunity is phenomenal.

With that said, (and as is always the case) it is really what you do with the opportunity that makes a world of difference. Therefore, I offer a bit of subjective advice:

-Take the time to find a great job and then make sure you get hired.

-The process is time consuming and definitely a bit daunting, but it is well worth your while to do your research and find a job that is right for you.

(READ: making copies and fetching coffee is not fun.)

-Be prepared. Drexel offers a ton of resources to help you in the interview process. Take the time to go to a resume critique, interview workshop etc. Cavanaugh's will still be there when you are done.

Kick a ton of a$$.

- Learn all you can about your job and your industry. Don't put out work that you're not proud of. Speak up. Share ideas. Create work for yourself if it is not being handed to you.

(READ: While getting paid to check facebook and talk on AIM may sound awesome now, promotions shortly after graduation will sound much more awesome later.)

At the end of the day, the co-op program just unlocks the deadbolt. It's your job to kick the door down.

Drexel Co-op Program.

Drexel University is very well known for their Co-Operative program, also known by most people as their co-op program. The co-op program objective is to integrate the Drexel curriculum with actual work experience. Drexel's co-op program has been around since 1919 and is one of the largest and most respected programs in the nation.

Drexel has two different co-op cycles, fall/winter and spring/summer. If a student is on the fall/winter co-op cycles then they are in classes spring/summer. Students do not have the choice of which cycle they wish to work and which cycle they wish to take classes. It is very hard to get your cycle switched unless you have substantial reason. There are three different co-op options that Drexel allows it students to choose from upon entering the university.

The three co-op, five year option includes three six-month full time periods of employment. The co-ops occur sophomore, pre-junior and junior years. Students on the three co-op, five year option gain a total of 18 months job experience before graduation.

The one co-op, four year option includes one six-month full time period of employment. This co-op occurs junior year.

The no co-op, four year option is intended for programs that do not require a six-month period of employment before graduation. Students who choose this option are not required to take classes summer term.

Drexel provides a process for the entire co-op experience. From requesting interviews to setting up interviews, to reviewing the co-op experience after each cycle, Drexel has a system in place online that is very easy to use. The co-op advisor's are also very willing to help with any questions you have during the co-op process. If you do not find a job listed on Drexel's system, you can also do an independent search. You have the opportunity to work anywhere in the world, as long as Drexel approves the job.

I think the Drexel co-op I an awesome program. I am currently on my third co-op and strongly believe that the co-op program is just as important as, or maybe even more important than the curriculum. Not only is the work experience great, you can make some money to pay for college and other living expenses along the way. I feel like my co-ops have thoroughly prepared me to enter the real world upon graduation. Who knows, maybe I will even work for one of the company's I worked for. It is not very common for Drexel students to work at their co-ops upon graduation. If you come to Drexel, be sure to take advantage of the co-op program.
