Prawat Nagvajara

An Olympian and a Professor

The 2006 Winter Olympics was the the second Olympic appearance for Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor Prawat Nagvajara. A native of Thailand, he is the sole representative from the country. As the oldest competitors in an endurance sport, he will compete in cross-country. He finished 68th in Salt Lake City.

Prawat Nagvajara teaches engineering as well as conducts research. How great would it be to say that not only did you have an incredibly intelligent man as a professor, but also an Olympic athlete?

Hard Courses Make Things Interesting

In college, you're going to have those extremely difficult courses. You can only hope that your professor will make it interesting and be incredibly helpful throughout the course. Dr. Neal Orkin is that man. He teachers Business Law.

Students have commented that you can't wait until the next class; he is humorous yet to the point. He teaches information that is practical and truly informative to his students. He also requests that students refer to him by his first name.

Discussion in the Humanities

Dr. Peter Amato teaches courses in both English and Philosophy. Dr. Amato enjoys including his students in the class. He feels that by discussion style courses, students are able to grasp subjects more easily. He loves what he teachers, and he wants his students to feel the same way. If you don't want to be involved in a course this is not the professor for you to take.

Lawrence Duke, Drexel Professor

You must take Larry Duke. He is by far one of the best professors at Drexel. The dual national (Irish/American) has amazing senior management experience around the world (i.e. - Citigroup/Citibank, International Monetary Fund (IMF)) and an awesome educational background, with an MBA Harvard Business graduate and a B.S. Mechanical Engineering, M.I.T. Drexel is fortunate to have him.

Not only does he cares for the students but he has great way of relating the course material to the real world. He is honest, personable and approachable, with brilliant stories about his life over seas. The man is a true asset to Drexel's factuality. Every business student should be required to take him and if they do not I feel that they have lost on their ROI at Drexel.

In the soon to be 5 years I have been here I have never had such an informative and enthusiastic professor like him. The writing material isn't so bad, just treat it as if it was a real job; do the work, go to class and you'll do well and learn a lot. It's all good.

At the beginning of each term, the faculty will provide students with e-mail addresses, office phone number as well as office hours. If the professor's office hours do not fit into your schedule, simply set up another appointment time.

Drexel professors are easily reached. They want to see you succeed in a course, and are often willing to help in any way possible. Some professors provide students with additional phone numbers and e-mail contacts to be accessible.

Drexel's student per teacher ratio is 14:1. Do not think however that there will only be fourteen people in your class. For introductory lecture classes there can be around 200. For discussion classes as well as courses that are defined in your major the number of people dwindles lower. There are typically about 25-35 people in a class. There are some courses, namely in the sciences and design which are much smaller.

The types of classrooms environments truly depend upon the professor. Some professors will lecture the entire time. Others truly value the discussion and input of students. The majority go back and forth between the two.

Drexel professors are now taking advantage of podcasting. This provides the professors with the ability to record, either audio or audio-visually, a lecture, which students may download through iTunes.
