Daskalakis Athletic Center
Article written by an anonymous user.
The Drexel Daskalakis Athletic Center, often referred to by students as the "DAC," is located on 33rd and Market Streets. The facility is two stories, yet three levels, with much of the facilities below ground.
Besides containing the main gymnasium, where the basketball teams play, the DAC is also equipped with two recreational basketball/volleyball gymnasiums, five squash courts and one table tennis room. The swimming area, open to students as long as there are no practices being held, contains an official collegiate sized pool as well as a diving well. When the pool is open there is always a lifeguard on duty.
The DAC is also equipped with the IBC Wellness Center. The Wellness Center has a 1200 square foot free weight room, a 4300 square foot all around fitness center with cardio and weight machines. The equipment is CYBEX and painted the school colors, Blue and Gold.
There are also two 1000 square foot rooms which are used for various classes which are taught by certified trained Drexel students. Students are able to take Pilates, yoga, martial arts, and a variety of dance classes amongst others. Class times and offerings vary by terms.
Drexel students are always milling around the DAC. The facilities are full of students throughout the day, but there is rarely any waiting time for equipment. When the athletic teams have lifting periods is typically when students run into the most problems with wait times. Teams typically do early morning workouts. Faculty also typically use the area in the early morning or early evening. The cardio room is always your best bet to work out with your iPod without an overcrowded space.
Access to Athletic Facilities
Similar to the other buildings at Drexel, you must use your Dragon Card to get into DAC ? there is a security officer at the door. You must also use your Dragon Card to gain access to the Buckley Turf Field.
Athletic Equipment
In exchange for your student ID, you may borrow equipment from the front desk. They provide rentals for: basketballs, racquets, and pool equipment as well as locker space. Feel free to bring your own, if you choose.
