The University of Virginia has a reputation of having one of the best looking campuses in the nation and in person, it doesn’t disappoint. Perhaps the first thing you will notice about the University is its very traditional look. Almost all of the buildings (including the sports complexes) are built with red brick and incorporate white columns and trim.

UVA’s most well known area is probably the Lawn and Rotunda, around which the University is centered. The Lawn is a large grass strip lined with academic buildings and Lawn Dorms (a prestiges living option only open to 4th year students after a competitive application process). During the spring, the Lawn truly is the place to be on Grounds, whether you are tossing a football around, hanging out with friends in between classes, or even having a class outside (if you you’re your professor is so inclined).

While UVA has a fairly large campus, don’t worry too much. The University does a great job of grouping similar academic departments into the same area. For example, if you’re an engineering major, most of your classes will be located in only a handful of buildings that are located close to each other. You will definitely appreciate this when you only have 10 minutes between classes. If however, you have that one elective that is located on the opposite side of campus, don’t worry- the University has an excellent bus service that can get you to anywhere you need to be on Grounds. And in truth, there really isn’t anywhere on Grounds that can be considered outside of walking distance.
