The University has a fairly good Transit System that many students take advantage of every day. There are two different bus lines (Orange and Blue) that run throughout the campus. During the weekdays the buses start early in the morning (around 7:00 or so) and run pretty late in the evening (10:00 or 11:00). The buses run later on the weekends. There are many University Bus stops all throughout grounds. There are enough buses in the University “fleet” that the longest you will have to wait is about 10 minutes to grab a ride. All of the buses are also equipped with GPS systems. Anyone can log onto UVA’s Transportation Webpage to locate a bus and determine when it will be arriving at a certain bus stop.

The University of Virginia’s campus is not that large and is certainly walk able, but there are some locations with which a bus ride is more convenient. The Darden Business School, University Law School, and Copley Housing Units are all North of the “main campus”. You could walk to each of those locations from the main campus but it could take anywhere from 15-20 minutes as opposed to a 5 minute bus ride. The buses are nice when it is raining and you do not feel like getting soaked walking to class or when it is 100 degrees outside.

Late at night it is often more safe to use the buses to get home rather than walking. Charlottesville is a small town, but crime has increased over the years. If the University buses are not in service after hours, the University also has a bus service called Saferide. Saferide operates all night long and will pick you up at your location and drive you safely to your new destination. The University is committed to safety and wants to make sure students can get home safely at all hours of the night.
