The UVA Marching Band Experience
Article written by an anonymous user.
In many ways, the Cavalier Marching Band is rare. It has the honor of representing and the reflecting the class and prestige that is the University of Virginia. The level of performance is astounding given certain factors. Depending on the year, there are sometimes zero music majors in the band. This is due to the fact that the University of Virginia does not have a full School of Music. The University offers a music degree, but these students have great flexibility in their curriculum. None of the 225+ members of the band are forced to participate in order to complete the music degree.
The members are very musically accomplished. Most could be majors at top music schools across the country. Some have participated in top drum corps. Almost the entire staff has drum corps experience. Although there is drum corps experience in the organization, the main goal of the marching band is maximizing entertainment value. The band gives the 63,000 fans in Scott Stadium a new show every home game. Practices are held from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. During a game week, the band meets Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.
Everything is provided for marching members. The instruments are all identical professional level models. All instruments are silver. Bach Stradivarius trumpets. Yamaha Mark saxophones. Buffet clarinets. All low brass instruments are of the highest quality. All Yamaha percussion instruments are the best that can be purchased and come in a blue forest stain. Members are taken on an all-expenses-paid bowl trip. In addition during the off-season, marching members can participate in other athletic bands. These bands play at almost all varsity and Olympic sporting events, including men’s and women’s basketball at John Paul Jones Arena.
In many ways, the Cavalier Marching Band has no equal. It is truly a wonderful experience for its members. While only four years old, the band has become one the most entertaining and accomplished elite marching ensembles in the nation. When compared against bands from the ACC, Big Ten, and Big Twelve, the Uva Cavalier Marching Band has been recognized by friendly and opposing spectators as the superior ensemble
