The La Salle experience:

Depending on what you are looking for, La Salle University might be a school that is right up your alley. Often considered an oasis in the heart of the Philadelphia ghetto, La Salle prides itself as a school above the grade in terms of the educational experience and the quality of students it has produced. Whereas with some of the larger schools in the Philadelphia area one might be lost in a crowded classroom, La Salle ensures a personal relationship with one’s professors through a smaller friendlier learning environment.

For over a century the La Sallian Christian Brothers have prided themselves on education and they are considered amongst the best in the world for just that. Though their numbers have dwindled in recent years, their pledge of offering the highest quality of learning has not. A majority of the faculty holds a doctorate in their field, classes are between twenty and twenty five students in size, and the campus boasts a first class library facility. Students will enjoy a "one on one" relationship with their teachers as well as hands on guidance in the classroom. This atmosphere is one of the more appealing reasons students choose to attend La Salle other than its friendly community.

Most find that life at La Salle is a lot like living in a neighborhood. Everyone seems to know one another and there are plenty of community activities going on at all times. The party scene, though small, is still vibrant at La Salle. Incoming freshman can expect a good showing after hours during their welcome weekend. It’s best to grab a cup and get out there even if you don’t drink. As a very social school those who don’t participate are often left behind.

In regards to city life, La Salle is only a fifteen minute subway ride to center city. Once there students can find a whole world of activity at their disposal whether it be catching a show or watching a baseball game. Most will finds that Philadelphia is a charming city with much to offer no matter what their taste. Fine dinning, night clubs, local bars and plenty of events keep this city on the map for places to have fun.

Housing:

As a former student and employee of La Salle’s housing department I can tell you that the place to live on campus is North Dorms. It’s the largest student housing complex and the hub for all activity. Mind you, it’s not for those who enjoy their quiet time. The rooms are average but it’s closest to the quad, and it makes for a great hangout spot.

If North Dorms is the city, South Campus is the suburbs. It is quiet and cozy. It’s perfect for those of us who like to study in a chill atmosphere, and is provided with a local cafeteria (Treetops café). The only drawback is the long uphill walk to campus. If you can’t bear to walk, there is a shuttle service provided at no cost.

Drawbacks:

La Salle is a suitcase school. As Thursdays and Friday are the primary party nights at La Salle, weekends are often left quiet and uneventful. The Resident Life Association usually tries to compensate for this by hosting events in the main quad.

Also, cost of living is a big drawback. When one considers what they are paying to live on campus it becomes a real turn off. One suggestion would be to live on campus for the first two years and to live off campus for the remaining two. You a guaranteed to save money and avoid a larger student loan debt.

Being that this school is essentially in a “bad area” there are no real local bars or hot spots to speak of. There is no point in wandering around looking for a local pub. As a matter of fact, traveling too far off the beaten path around La Salle is frowned upon and downright dangerous. If you are looking for a good time, Center City is always a safer more enjoyable alternative.
