There is something to be said for a college with little to no greek life.

The people involved in greek life are super involved, and the people who aren't - aren't.

People who are in the few sororities here love them. They joined for multiple reasons, but most likely because they wanted a way to have some sort of support system in this giant mess of a city. Thats fine, a lot of people grow out of it but some stay in the bubble that is NYU greek life. The few sorority girls hang out almost exclusively with the few sorority guys and formals and semi formals are just a mix and match of old dates and new flings.

Sorority life here gets a bad wrap because people at NYU are all about non-conformity and the individual, but if you are starting NYU and you are worried about missing out on Greek life then just check it out. You might find that it gets you through Freshman year and the you go abroad and you meet other people and when you return to the city you're over it. Or you might find that its the best choice you ever made.

Its not as rare as people make it sound, and I've never met someone here and pegged them as a frat boy because unless they have their sweatshirt on you cant tell.

Additionally, there are a lot of clubs and in school frats. Clubs are great ways of meeting people with similar interests, or hearing about speakers and events going on down the block that otherwise you would be oblivious to. Joining a LISTSERVE will keep you in touch with all of your clubs events, and although sometimes the emails start to pile up - if youre no longer interested its easy to unsubscribe.

Moving to New York isnt easy, but if you make an effort to involve yourself - whether in a club or in greek life or in a non-profit or a job - you will meet people and you will survive. No one from outside of New York starts out here knowing everyone. It takes time to meet people, but with a little effort its not too hard.
