Pharmaceutical Marketing: The Bio B-schooler
Saint Joseph's University has a reputable Jesuit history, but over the last decade, SJU's Haub School of Business has carved out its own reputation as one of Philly's top B-schools, topped only by the nation's best at Wharton and Nofun-Nova. With a nice diversity of B-majors, Haub is a great option for bright Freshman still in search of an academic identity.
Haub's Accounting and Food Marketing majors have had deep pools of talent throughout their program's and they have carried a lot of the weight in getting the school to where it is today. However, more and more talented students are challenging themselves outside of tedious audits and pushing Campbell's Soup.
Pharmaceutical Marketing has steadily increased in numbers and in some of Haub's top talent. It's a logical move for undecided's, bored Food and traditional Marketing majors, and even Nursing majors not looking forward to kicking it in Crocs for the rest of their career.
Pharma Marketing consists of a range of challenging core studies - Pharmacology, Pharma Promotion & Advertising, Pharma Sales, Strategy & Policy, and Research & Analytics. That core is supported by SJU's sound business foundation courses and the school's liberal arts requirements. Moreover, Pharma Marketers are exposed everyday to well respected industry professionals - Dr's Thani, Choh, Sillup, and Trombetta.
Moreover, the major is supported by one of Saint Joseph's University's most active B-school student groups, PILOT (Pharmaceutical Industry Leaders Of Tomorrow). As former President, I can attest to the value of the program and its impact on student growth and career opportunities. Charity and fundraising events aside, every month PILOT hosts 2-3 heavy industry hitters that come in and present an industry lunch-and-learn that can range anywhere in topics about job opportunities to a demonstration on medical devices used in cardiac bypass surgery.
The healthcare industry, which Pharmaceutical Marketing prepares you for, is a $400 Billion industry, and rapidly growing. Boomer aging (and even the larger Gen-X) is a sign of consistent growth to come. Also, with the volatile economy, B-schools are suffering from student confidence in the job market. However, the Pharmaceutical industry is relatively shielded from economic volatility because, in general, people have to pay for their medicine to stay healthy and live longer.
If you're considering Pharmaceutical Marketing at Saint Joseph's University, consider this: it's not just "Pharma" marketing. Pharma Marketing Alumni are spread accross healthcare in feilds like Biotechnology, Medical Devices, Genomics, Nursing, etc. Lastly, attractive salary aside, there is great pride in the industry in knowing you can influence a complete stranger's health in a positive way.
