My co-op experience at Digitas Health

When i first enrolled at Drexel University i thought to myself, who would want to go to college for 5 years? Here i am almost done my 5th year and i finally realize that 5 is better than 4. One of the main reasons 5 is better than 4 is because of the co-op program at Drexel. If you are not aware, this is how it works. Freshman year you go to classes from September through June. Savor that summer break because it will be your last.

Senior year works the same way. You are in classes from September through June, and then you graduate. Sophmore, Pre-Junior, and Junior year is where the co-op cycle kicks in. For 6 months out of the year you will be in classes. For the other 6 months you will be working full time, 40 hours a week. Drexel's Steinbright Career Development Center is great with helping students find jobs, and the online database where you can apply is a great tool. My first co-op was for a recruiting firm. The company was a start-up and basically we functioned as the HR department for our clients. The most i got out of that was improved communication skills, and the ability to talk with all different types of people. My second co-op was in the litigation department for a an accounting firm.

My third and final co-op, and where i am still currently employed, is Digitas Health. Digitas Health is a next generation marketing agency. We help build healthcare brands that patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals feel confident turning to and recommending when they are sick, in need, or helping others. Digitas Health has offices in Philadelphia, New York, and Chicago.

Most of our clients are major pharmaceutical companies such as AstraZeneca, Merck, Eli Lily, Sanofi-Aventis, Wyeth, Bristol Myers-Squibb, and more. I am part of the SEO (search engine optimization) team at Digitas Heath. We are a small but growing team in the media department. In a nutshell, it is our job to have our clients web sites rank high up in the organic results in search engines. A lot goes into this, and it is an ongoing process.

Like many Drexel students, i am still working for the company i did a co-op with even after the co-op cycle finished. I have met a lot of great people and learned a lot at the same time. Drexel University is a great school to go to because it really does prepare you for the real world. Furthermore, Digitas Health is a great place to work and i am glad i am here.
