Charlottesville has invested a great deal of money upgrading its venues to attract musicians and performers. Located on the Downtown Mall, the Charlottesville Pavilion, has been rebuilt in recent years and has attracted numerous national musicians. The Pavilion is an open amptheater that can accommodate a few thousand people at any event. The fact that it is located on the Downtown Mall is another advantage. You can enjoy a nice dinner, have a drink, or just walk around before the show. The Paramount Theater, which is also located on the Downtown Mall, has also been rebuilt and offers even more choices for patrons. The Paramount schedules various jazz/classical musicians, theatrical performances, and stand up comedy routines including Bill Cosby.
Not only does the new John Paul Jones Arena serve the men’s and women’s basketball teams, it also serves as an excellent concert venue and is the largest multi-purpose arena in the state of Virginia. It has recently been named the best new concert venue for the year 2006 and has attracted performers such as Billy Joel, Cirque Du Soleil, Bruce Springstein, Justin Timberlake, The Red Hot Chili Peppers as well as Kanye West. This provides the University student with numerous opportunities to see national artists in their home college town.
