Something every college student has to choose is a major and this is a decision that people constantly change throughout college. The one thing I did not change was the decision that I wanted 2 majors from IU's Kelley School of Business. Many majors have many of the same requirements and you can find all of this information at the b-school's website. Something I quickly learned when determining which classes I had to take for my major is that this is something I had to do on my own. Academic advisors offer some guidance and can give you the list of requirements but be sure and study this on your own. More than once I received poor advice. Receiving 2 degrees from a school that is perennially in the Top 10 is something that will benefit me the rest of my life.
I chose Finance and Accounting because I knew both of these skills would apply in any area of business and would help make me more marketable to recruiters. At IU students do not take degree specific classes until your junior year. The first 2 years are spent taking 15 prerequisite courses that everyone in the business school must take. These are called I-Core (Integrative Core) prereqs. I-Core is a group of 3 classes that everyone must take and it consumes an entire semester. I could write an entire book on I-Core but this is what makes the Kelley School great. This semester is built around learning Finance, Marketing, and Operations. You are then placed into teams, given a crazy deadline, and must apply everything you have learned throughout the course of the semester to make or break your grade. Its pretty intense but you walk away learning a lot.
There is some room for flexibility when choosing classes because there is a general education requirement which allows you to choose classes to take in other areas of study (Psychology, Sociology, Criminal Justice, Music, etc.) The general education requirement was great because the business courses can be pretty tough and it was nice to be able to choose a class I was interested in and would most likely be an easier course.
No matter what major you choose or where you go to school the one thing I tell everyone is that you must study abroad. I graduated in 4 years with a double major and was still able to study abroad. The Kelley School while it is very demanding and certain courses must be taken it is flexible enough that you can take courses outside of the b-school and still graduate in 4 years.
