On July 23rd, 2008, former Richmond Spider Arman Shields signed a contract with the Oakland Raiders, making him an official NFL player. Shields was selected by Oakland in the 4th round of this year's draft (the 125th overall pick) after putting up impressive numbers at the NFL combine. The 6'1" 195-pound wide receiver placed in the top ten of all seven categories for receivers and led the draft class with his 40' time. Unfortunately, Shields missed all but one game of the 2007 season with the Spiders due to a knee injury, so many teams questioned his durability. His durability was thrown further into doubt when the young receiver had to miss much of the Raider's minicamp with a hamstring pull.
However, now that training camp has started, Shields has resumed impressing the Oakland staff. He is now competing for the fourth or fifth reciever slot with 7th-round draft pick Chaz Schilens and, according to Yahoo Sports, "immediately showed why he was drafted in the fourth round, ahead of Schilens, by making several difficult catches in practice." When questioned about his impressive play, Shields responded "I try to give [the hits]. I give them. I don’t believe in taking them, I give them." He is expected to be a valuable asset to the Raiders offense and special teams should he continue to perform well.
During his tenure at UR, Shields caught 160 passes for 1,930 yards, averaged 12.0 yards per catch and scored 13 touchdowns.
