written word, forever, the original

Article ArchivePure Information

Interpreting the written word is the best and most reliable way to learn. It is difficult, however, "especially in this day and age", to find time to read. Books are being replaced by Websites at a rapid rate. Younger generations seem to enjoy a more interactive atmosphere when they are learning because we like to be simultaneously entertained. It is easier to pay attention to movies and music compared to books and articles. Sometimes it seems like everyone just likes to look at the pictures. Well, this is not a mens' magazine.

Conversation Starters
When evaluating colleges and universities there are many factors to consider, location, size, programs just to name a few. One thing that your advisor may not tell you to consider is the brand name and/or brand recognition of a school. I can't count the times I have "named dropped" Penn State to kick off a conversation with someone. Working in advertising, saying that I am a Penn State alumni has gotten my foot into numerous conversations. From interviews to meeting people at organization meetin...

Around the Burg
JMU is in Harrisonburg, VA which is in the Shenandoah Valley. Washington D.C. is about 2 hours away, as is Richmond, and Charlottesville is just over an hour away if you're interested in shopping, clubbing or the culture/art scene. It's about 45 minutes from the West Virginia border if you're into extreme motorcycle riding, mountain biking, or mudbogging. Massanutten resort is 20 minutes east on 33 and they have snowboarding, skiing, and an indoor/outdoor waterpark. Skyline driv...

Viva! Nightclub
So, last night went out with one of my best friends to celebrate her 21st. The place we ultimately ended up heading to was this club called Viva!. Located in the Central West End, the club is very much with a Latin flavor to it. Going into the club itself, the atmosphere was nice, but a little smoky for my taste. As a 21-year old, it also was a bit odd to be on the very tip of the spectrum here. Entry is restricted to 21 and up flat out, so either be upperclassmen or have a good fake lol....

Chesterfield Mall
So today, went out shopping with my friends, first time in a long while. Anyways, we drove out to a mall called Chesterfield Mall. Getting there from campus is easy assuming I-64/40 is there (currently a large section of the highway is under construction, estimated to be completed sometime in the next 4 months. Barring that, however, the journey even with part of 64/40 out is not that long. So anyways, the mall itself. The mall has a good three or four anchor stores, and everything typi...

Vaughan Becomes 2nd Spider to Go Pro in 2009
On April 27th, just one day after the 2009 NFL draft, University of Richmond senior running back Josh Vaughan received a call from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The halfback from Richmond, Va., led the Spiders in rushing last year with 1,945 yards rushing on 355 attempts and 20 touchdowns. He also had 19 receptions for 67 yards. While Vaughan was not picked in the seven rounds of the NFL draft, he is not letting that stop him from entering the pros. He plans on following former teammate and Arizona...

Hamilton's - The Best Place on Earth
Hamilton's is the greatest, providing a place to start the party early. I have yet to find a bar quite like it anywhere else I have lived. It's the Loyola version of Cheers. Hamilton's boasts great specials (wing night, pitcher night, $1 burgers, etc.) and all the faces you will get to know and love. Bartenders and servers are great (I used to be one), but students tend to not tip well - change this! It is in great proximity to the LUC campus; the building I lived in my last year I could ac...

Sidbury Selected by Falcons
Just moments ago, star University of Richmond defensive end Lawrence Sidbury Jr. was selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the 2009 NFL Draft. The pick came early in the second day of the draft in the fourth round (#126 overall). Sidbury is expected to compete with current Falcons starters Jamaal Anderson and John Abraham for playing time, likely as a situational pass rusher. This marks the third Spider taken in the NFL draft since 2008, with the others being wide receiver Arman Shields (Oakland) a...

The River
During the end of summer and spring, it gets really hot down here at Richmond. It gets really hot randomly during the year as well, but especially during the beginning of the first semester and the end of the second semester. There is a river 5 minutes from U of R that everyone goes to and everyone has a great time at. You just go down River Road, cross the bridge, and you are there. It is a huge river that is pretty wide across, and it has giant rocks littered around it and in it that you c...

Spanish 221 (LAIS 221)
This class is worth 2 units (or 6 credits to normal schools) so it is a heavy hitter. But the reason it is worth two classes of credit is because it takes up 2 classes worth of time. The class meets 5 days a week, Monday through Friday, and also there are two separate drill sessions that meet twice a week. So you will have 50 minute classes 3 days a week, 1 hour and 15 minute classes twice a week, and then two extra 45 minute drill sessions also. It seems like a lot of time, but it isn't as...

Software Tools (BUAD 203)
Besides business communications, I would say this is one of the most important classes you will take at the Robins School of Business. All companies these days want their employees to be skilled with computers and their software. Especially Microsoft Excel. That's why this class is so important to business majors. It is a class dedicated to becoming highly skilled in Microsoft Excel. It is only half of a unit and it only meets once a week, but you will learn a ton. You can do pretty much a...
